DIY: Custom Subaru Bug Deflector for 06-08 Forester XT. Make way for the scoop!
If you look for a hood protector for an 06-08 Forester you will find one model and states "not for turbo model" Why Subaru decided not to include or continue the turbo model bug deflectors for the Forester is beyond me. All other models appear to have either readily purchasable but the 06-08 Forester.
After much research I found a few others have chopped out the center section to allow for proper hood scoop flow. So with my trusty knockoff Dremel tool and cut off wheel to do what it takes to make my own, I gave it a go.
Now on to the project. I started by taking the deflector to my car and lining up the hood lines and marking them. I then measured to find the center of the deflector just below the upturned area, which deflects the incoming air to scoop. Then I arced lines down from the side to the center point. Then masking them off with painter’s tape to keep the chipping down when using the cutoff tool.
Setting the deflector back on the hood I checked my lines and began to sand down the rougher edges and smooth out the arc. After rounding a down the corners I purchased a roll of car door trim to cover the top. If you have tools you can wet sand and polish the edge smooth and skip the last step.
Since installing these I have used door guard trim to cover the cuts. I wasn’t too confident within my ability to sand it down to an even smooth arcing finish. These did the job but after some time in the sun and highway speed the adhesive would give way. I decided to try a different style of door guard that had metal inside that pinches tightly down. Which also appears to form and hold much tighter… I think this will be the best answer to this issue.
Now following the Subaru factory instructions to install it on the car. And then step back and enjoy your hard work! Then question yourself on why Subaru couldn’t have just made this for us in the first place.
