Exedy stage 1 clutch: 15804. How is it holding up so far...?
Hey!... Welcome to this week's #modmonday! Today we will be looking at my first impressions of the Forester's new clutch, @Exedy stage 1 clutch PN: 15804. The STi has run a stage 1 Exedy clutch for years and I have been really impressed with it, that I decided on it for the Fxt.
Going into a motor replacement or major repair you think about those things that "should" be done while it is out. I.e. head gaskets, seals, clutch? And, well I decided to get them all done in one shot in hopes I would not need to pull it anytime soon. With these thoughts on my mind a brand new Exedy clutch and flywheel were ordered.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my Exedy stage 1 clutch in the STi. It retains the stock feel but the extra clamping to allow me to drop it at 5k+ on the auto-x or drag strip. While still being an easy workout for my left leg. Now with the clutch installed in the Forester I had noticed it is much stiffer than stock.
Why is it stiffer? Is it the push style Fxt trans vs the pull style STI? Or the fact that it replaces a much softer pressure plate because of the lower output from the factory? Or that the Stage 1 replaces the dual mass flywheel setup? I can't be for sure but this thing was stiff for the first week. It has definitely softened up since the first day but still is quite a leg full coming from the stock unit.
Given there are no output numbers on the stock version I did not want to end up overwhelming it. Knowing that this holds up to 301 ft lbs of torque rest easy knowing it should last awhile.
While switching to this clutch you will need to swap to a solid flywheel instead of the factory dual mass. I went ahead and purchased it directly from Exedy, installation of both was a breeze with all the proper parts accounted for and directions to help you along. Looking forward to how it works out over the next coming months.
